A radio personality or radio presenter is a person who has an on-air position in radio broadcasting. A radio personality who hosts a radio show is also known as a radio host, and in India and Pakistan as a radio jockey. The task of a radio jockey is to keep the listeners entertained and engaged by playing music, conveying a message or conversing with guests. This person conducts programmes as per a theme assigned to him/her; it can be a lifestyle, relationships, news, entertainment, etc.
You must have guessed the interviewee of this week, that's correct. He is a radio jockey. So let's dive right into this interactive session with Rahul Dayan.
Tell us about yourself.
Hello! I am Rahul currently, working as an RJ at NammRadio.Since I am working in an international radio station as an RJ, my daily work would be to cater to great entertainment or a daily dose of energy to my fellow listeners across the globe.
Tell us about your schooling and education.
I did my schooling at Saint Mira's High School and followed up with my PU education at Vijaya junior College and completed my Civil Engineering at Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering and I thought that this was the endpoint because I knew that even if I had to pursue higher education I felt, my choice of work was always in the field of Entertainment Industry and definitely not a technical industry.
How were you drawn to this profession?
Right from my school days, I used to anchor shows for my school and host private events also. And along with this, I was an avid fan of Radio since ages and used to admire that time RJs and I still do it now. Maybe, these things kindled the spark in me.
Were you always interested to take this path?
I was super ready for this always. But it was indefinite for me because I never knew how the radio industry worked. And moreover, it's a completely different style of working when you compare emceeing and a radio station. So, always had a passion for it but quite unsure whether I would make it or not. Thankfully, made it!!😁
What are your other fields of interest?
Other than radio jockeying, I love to act, write scripts and also have had some unreleased short movie in my bag pack. These have always been my fields of interest- writing, acting and directing.
If not an RJ, what would you be?
As of now, my wife's RJing and my old lover is always acting. So given a perfect opportunity, I would love to get back to my old lover😜. Maybe I would have opted to be an actor if not an RJ. You never know what's in store for you in the future.
How nervous do you get while interviewing?
I was really very nervous. It was a very formal interview of some Real Estate builders association. I was completely on and off throughout the interview. Initially, there's always this sense of nervousness for any budding interviewer in any media. But as and on you keep dealing with the same things, you quite get acquainted with the things, and nervousness gradually disappears.
Which is your best interview till date?
Definitely it has to be Powerstar Puneet Rajkumar's. During the interview, I was mesmerized by the patience and humbleness of Appu Sir. And after the interview was done, he personally had some chat, off the record with me and we had some great time. So being a great superstar himself, who usually does that right? And never to forget, the hospitality showed by him, his staff and everybody is still very fresh in my mind. Even though I have had interviewed some big guns from the film industry, this interview will always be close to my heart.
What's the fun part of your job?
The fun part is to get connected with the listeners across the globe and with each and every emotion of theirs. Also, being a part of the close circle with celebrities, interacting with them and all that. Not to forget, that it is a god scripted job for someone like me who loves to talk.
Pros and cons of being an RJ?
The pros definitely have to be the emotional connection which I establish with listeners and some extra limelight in public places. The con is that being a human being, you tend to go through a lot of emotions daily. But every day, you will have to hide the rest of your emotions and present yourself cheerfully On-Air for your listeners. That's difficult!
How supportive were your parents towards this?
To be frank, they were like every other Indian parent who denies the permission for their child to follow his passion as his profession, but later on, they were impressed by the work what I'm doing gradually. So now they'll like "okay"
How was quarantine for you? Was it productive?
Definitely. Had got a lot of free time to concentrate on myself, the actual "me time" and also different segments in my show. I also interviewed celebrities like Ragini Dwivedi, Rishi, Ashvithi Shetty about their lockdown routines. Had been a COVID Warrior too for some time, helping the frontline workers in their job. But as usual, every day is a brand new productive day for me. Since you can't serve the same old wine in a new bottle. So I'll come up with something new and productive for my show every day.
What would you advice your juniors in the same field?
The fun in the radio industry is immense and intense. So whoever is planning to take up RJing or any back end work like Show production, promo production, etc., As their profession, I urge them to take it up, since it involves a lot of learning, interaction and involvement from, with and of the society. And bottom line is, it's always fun to work with music and energy bubbles around you isn't it?
What's next for you?
There's this saying in Kannada, which goes like, "ನಿನ್ನೆ ನಿನ್ನೆಗೆ, ನಾಳೆ ನಾಳೆಗೆ" and I strongly believe in this. You never know what's in store for you. So wait for the surprise until God presents it to you and then relish it with great joy. Haven't planned anything. But as of now, I stick myself to the walls of the studio along with my mic.. and before ending, as I usually say, ನಿಮ್ಮ ಪ್ರೀತಿಯ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಿಂದ, ನಿಮ್ಮ RJ ರಾಹುಲ್ signing off.. ಜೈ ಹಿಂದ್! ಜೈ ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಮಾತೆ!!😁😁
That's it for today's Social Dialogue! Tune in next Sunday for another interesting interview!
